Rugby

Dean Close rugby has a mission statement: “To maximise the rugby talent within the School, providing the opportunity to play at the highest level within the pathway of elite rugby.”

As we enter a new phase in the development of rugby we welcome the arrival of new Director of Rugby, Andrew Stanley.  Andrew joined us from Gloucester RFC where he was 1st XV forwards coach, and previously Academy Manager.  Alongside Director of Sport, Greg Baber-Williams and the other coaching staff, they are implementing a programme which aims to develop both the individual and the team, through an enjoyable and comprehensive syllabus.

The programme includes the whole School training and fixture card, and for more elite performers, the rugby mentoring programme.  The School is focused on its performance of both the fifteen and seven-a-side games with a great provision for training both as a team and as an individual.  There is the opportunity for any player of any standard to represent the School at rugby.

Dean Close enters the national NatWest Cup Competition and also has a very competitive school playing programme.  In addition, three teams (U13, U16 & U18) are entered in the national Schools 7’s tournament at Rosslyn Park.

    The Rugby Mentoring Programme

The School’s Rugby Academy is directed by Andrew Stanley and is designed in line with the RFU Premiership Academies to maximise and develop talent through the following areas:

    • Technical:  skill development

    • Tactical:  game understanding – position and unit specific

    • Physical:  conditioning, nutrition, rehabilitation, injury prevention

    • Psychological:  mental preparation, anxiety control

The programme is committed to one-to-one mentoring, which is supported by guest coaches and current professional players, providing up-to-date expert guidance.  The School has a strong relationship with Gloucester Rugby and Worcester Warriors Academy with coaches coming in on a regular basis to coach on an individual and group basis.
