The subject of Physical Education offers excellent examination qualifications that assist pupils in variety of ways. Career paths can include physiotherapy, sports coaching, PE teaching, personal training, nutritionist and sports journalism, to name just a few.

Dean Close offers PE as an academic subject at both iGCSE and A Level and we would welcome anyone who has a keen interest in sport and is good practically in a range of different activities, as well as wanting to learn the theory side.  Our subject is delivered through a department with five dynamic teachers, whose passions and expertise all lie in different sporting areas.

Have you ever wondered……

  • Why some people can run faster than others?
  • How your personality affects your performance?
  • How you could become an elite sports performer?
  • Why people take drugs?
  • How technology can help improve your performance?

We can help you answer all of these questions and many more.

Dean Close provides opportunities for it pupils to access the best coaches and equipment available, and this includes taking pupils to the University of Gloucestershire where they can use their exercise physiology testing equipment.  Furthermore, pupils have the opportunity to listen to inspirational speakers at the Cheltenham Literature Festival, such as adventurers Ben Fogle and Sir Ranulph Fiennes, rowers Steve Redgrave and Matthew Pinsent and cricketer Jonathan Trott, who have all discussed their individual challenges and how they overcame them to achieve their individual successes.

Dean Close Sports Department runs regular overseas tours to some of the most sportingly competitive and advanced countries in the world.  Most recently these have included South Africa, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand.
