EQUESTRIAN SPORT at DEAN CLOSE SCHOOL

There are up to 45 girls and boys from Year 4 through to Year 13 who are members of the Dean Close Equestrian Club. The Club is open to anyone no matter what level they are, as the emphasis is on promoting and developing potential and enjoying their experiences with horses and ponies.

Half of the members have riding lessons at Summerhouse Equestrian Centre and learn stable management and half have their own horses and ponies and compete for the School at the National Schools Equestrian Association and Just for Schools competitions in Show Jumping, Eventing and Dressage. The School registers its riders with the NSEA, British Eventing and British Show jumping for inter- schools competitions. The aim with the NSEA is to qualify for the National Championships and the Plate Championships held in year in October and December respectively.  At our last championships in 2017 Dean Close had both teams and individuals qualified for Show Jumping, Dressage, Eventer challenge and Jumping with Style competitions with top 8 placings in the country achieved in Dressage, SJ and JwS. Dean Close is also the only school to have retained back-to-back wins of the 1.10m Pony Show jumping Championship in 2015 & 2016.

Dean Close is able to offer Polo training and lessons at Novice, Intermediate and Open level at Longdole Polo club and enter Schools and Universities Polo Association tournaments dependent on numbers playing each year. Dean Close has previously won the SUPA open championships and polo is something that is a very popular sport in and around Gloucestershire.

The equestrian programme not only offers pupils the opportunity to develop their talents, it gives them confidence, individuality and the ability to shine in their chosen sport when they may not feel confident in other areas of sport or academia. The Equestrian athletes and interest at Dean Close School grows year on year and in recognition of this Equestrian Scholarships are now available to be applied for.

RIDING LESSONS

Lessons for beginner, intermediate and advanced riders are arranged at Summerhouse Equestrian Centre under instruction from British Horse Society qualified instructors. The facilities include two large indoor arenas, an outdoor arena and a set of British Show Jumping Association standard show jumps.

SHOW JUMPING, CROSS COUNTRY, EVENTING, DRESSAGE AND SHOWING

The School actively supports those with their own horses to compete in their chosen disciplines. In 2017 Dean Close had two riders compete at the Horse of the Year Show and one rider at the Badminton Grass Roots championships. Individual training programmes are discussed and supported when possible. The teams have enjoyed notable success but the onus is always on enjoying competing and developing potential on their horses and ponies.

POLO

An exciting sport enjoyed by boys and girls at Dean Close with training at Longdole Polo Club in Birdlip. The facilities are excellent with an outdoor arena and splendid grass pitches to train and play on. The top class Hurlingham Polo Association instructors, alongside well- trained enthusiastic polo ponies, offer tuition at the highest standard. When able the teams are regularly entered in the Schools’ summer and winter polo tournaments which are good fun.
